Design intent

A waistcoat is the one garment in menswear that exists almost entirely for layering - worn between a shirt and a jacket, or over a shirt as the jacket itself. The Alder begins with a simple question: what if the traditional button row - the defining visual element of every waistcoat since the 18th century - could remain exactly as it looks, while fastening took only seconds, without the slow and repetitive fastening process? Then our hidden magnetic system provides the answer.

Design inspiration

The European field waistcoat - a fitted, stand-collared vest worn by hunters, gamekeepers, and foresters in the Alpine and Central European tradition - is the direct reference for the Alder's cut and collar geometry. The cognac leather trim is borrowed from 19th-century Austrian Trachten waistcoats, where contrast bindings marked the quality of construction. The Alder Waistcoat is named after the alder tree, commonly found along riverbanks in Europe - evoking the feeling of standing in a quiet valley by the water, at ease and unhurried.

Craft details

The shell is a washed linen fabric with the crackled wash surface that references oilcloth and aged military cloth. The fit is a close European waistcoat cut. The stand collar is bound in vegetable-tanned cognac leather; all three welt pockets are bound in the same leather. The magnetic closure system is heat-set into a double-layer reinforced woven interlining behind the decorative button row, creating a perfect engagement along the full placket length. All magnet units are encapsulated before assembly and rated through 200+ machine-wash cycles.
