Design intent

The overshirt sits between shirt and jacket, in the gap where both fall short. The Pioneers is designed to occupy that space deliberately. We tested whether AbleCove’s magnetic closure system could support heavier panels, a stiffer collar, and deeper pockets without losing strength. It is calibrated for the jacket’s weight, while the chore-inspired structure remains unchanged.

Design inspiration

The chore jacket's origin is 19th-century French working dress - the bleu de travail, worn by artisans, railroad workers, and farmhands across continental Europe before the silhouette crossed the Atlantic and became the American barn jacket. The elbow patches on the Pioneers are borrowed from the craftsman: a patch sewn over the elbow before it wore through, cheaper than a new jacket and more honest than a decorative one. The tan colorway is barn-floor khaki - the color of dry earth and canvas, undyed-looking even when it isn't.

Craft details

Shell is a mid-weight twill fabric, structured enough to hold the silhouette without stiffening into a jacket. The boxy fit cuts with a dropped shoulder and straight side seam, finishing hip-length with a flat hem. Oval elbow patches are cut from the same fabric and stitched flat to both sleeves. The magnetic closure system sits behind the front placket, pocket flaps, cuffs, and a back collar loop. All magnets are heat-welded into reinforced casings before assembly, with closure force calibrated for mid-weight fabric.
